Adoption Process FAQ
How long does the adoption process take from start to finish?+
Most families go from application to placement in 12 to 24 months, with finalization about 6 months after placement. The home study (3–6 months) and the wait to match (typically 9–18 months) are the biggest pieces — and everything before your profile goes live is largely within your control.
Can we adopt if the birth mother lives in another state?+
Yes — interstate placements are routine through the Interstate Compact on the Placement of Children (ICPC). It adds roughly 1–2 weeks of approval time at placement while both states sign off, and we handle that coordination for you.
What makes some families match faster than others?+
Openness, more than anything: families open to a broader range of situations — different backgrounds, levels of contact, and medical histories — typically match sooner. That's not about compromising your values; it's about getting genuinely clear on what you are and aren't open to.
What if a birth mother changes her mind?+
Until she signs consent — which happens only after birth — the decision is fully hers, and sometimes that means a match doesn't become a placement. It's painful, and we support you through it: your counselor stays close, and we talk honestly at intake about how fees are handled so a disruption never blindsides you twice.
