Making Your Choices

YOU will make the decisions regarding your baby and adoption plan.  It is important to remember that the adoption professional you are working with should really listen to your needs and concerns. YOU need to be the one that is deciding about the type of family you want and selecting the family, if you choose.  The adoption agency can also help you select a family based on what is important to in a family.

  • Adoptive Family YOU may be looking for a family with children or without children, a two parent family or a single parent family, a parent that stays-at-home with the child and many other factors that may be important to you.
  • Type of Communication – YOU will choose if you want to start building a relationship with the adoptive family prior to the baby being born.  It may be in-person, Skype, over the phone or social media.   A reputable adoption agency will help you to build the relationship and support you as you navigate this relationship.  YOU will also choose how you want to communicate with the family after placement.  You may choose to have all of your correspondence through the adoption agency, so as to protect your privacy and the adoptive family privacy or you may choose social media and visits.
  • Hospital Plan – YOU will also create a hospital plan with your counselor or caseworker that will support your needs in the hospital.  You will decide such things as; who you want at the hospital when the baby is born and following the birth, if and when you want to spend time with the baby, if you want photos and how you will discharge.

These are just a few of the choices you will have.  YOU will be in charge of your plans.
